PLEASE NOTE: Carriers change their plans and pricing constantly, so this may or may not be true for you when you order. We're just passing on the information we've learned from speaking to the carriers ourselves.

Well, for all of you trying to get a fax plan for your 650, we finally can tell you what to ask for after a kind user sent in a screen shot. The data and fax plan does NOT appear on the Cingular website for the general public, but it is available on the Cingular site after you've logged in. In the plans section, it looks like this:

As many people have had problems with Cingular reps pointing them towards the wrong service, you'll need to insist. This is the "CSD" service needed for faxing on Cingular.

Cingular reps have stated this service is no longer available, spoke with them on 2/21/06. Anyone have new ideas for fax with Cingular?

If Cingular does in fact cut off CSD service, Cingular users are out of luck. Cellular modems are in fact not on the phone, but rather "split", with half of the modem on the phone and the actual modem device in a modem pool back at the carrier. If Cingular turns them off, then the Cingular 650 effectively no longer has a modem.

The service is still on the web page. You have to change your plan.

On the left menu choose My Rate Plan.
Then choose Change Plan on the right.
Choose a plan (like Nation (GSM) Plans).
Pick Add to Cart for the minutes you want.
Under features added, fax will be an item on the right.

Ok, today I spoke with Cingular. Cingular did in fact drop CSD service back in December. It's still available on their website, but that's the only way to order it. They continue to support existing CSD service customers but are taking no new orders. (This also means that you can't use a Cingular Treo 650 as a terminal+data modem either)

That it's still available on the website is an anomaly. It's not clear at the moment if it works, but they will take the order and charge for it. Once you have the plan, the support rep I spoke with said that they will work with you to get it working, so it seems to be a matter of just getting it ordered. Reps apparently cannot order the service for you. The codes they use to add & remove services from an account no longer include a code for the CSD option. The website is the only way.

Cingular does not provide a direct number to the data support group any more. To get assistance with a CSD plan, you need to call customer care, ask your question and get your call passed on to the data support group through them. Issues related to a CSD connection are supposed to be passed on to Tier 2 support, which handles cellular network connectivity issues.

For what it's worth, the Cingular rep in data support I spoke with actually knew exactly what she was doing, so they DO have some good people, if you can reach them.

At this point, I think if someone was motived enough they could still get fax service out of Cingular, but at this point if you want working Treo fax and data modem support, you might want to look at a different carrier.
