I’m an engineering student currently doing a project for San Diego’s Emergency medical services. One of our goals is to get medical information from a scene to the hospital as fast as possible. This allows for faster treatment and patient care.

I’m currently working with electrocardiograms (EKG). These are the machines you see all the time on tv/movies in the hospital that bleeps everytime your heart beats. EKGs take a reading of a heartbeat. When a person has a heart attack and calls 911, the paramedics arrive and immediately hook up an EKG to determine what’s wrong with the heart. I want to get this reading sent directly to the hospital for analysis.

The EKG has only two forms of output. One is a printout and the other is a fax. All medics carry with them a Palm Treo 700p. I am trying to get this reading faxed directly to the Palm so it can be emailed along with other patient information to the hospital.

I have little experience with Palm and fax modems so if someone could help me out that’d be great. I need a direct connection between the EKG to the Palm through an external fax modem. CSfax automatically connects to the CDMA modem, but I need a direct rather than wireless connection. I’m not quite sure what kind of external fax modem I need. The majority of external fax modems seem to have drivers written for windows. Also, the info on the FAQ says I'll need special cables to connect the external fax to the Palm. Most external modems have USB connectors; will that not work? Also, once I have an external modem connected, how should I configure the modem settings in CSfax?

Thanks for any help.

This application is fairly complex. While CS Fax has been used for sending EKG's in the past, that was in the form of sending them to the specialist for analysis, not the other way around.

We have your query in support and are planning on calling for more specifics.

I think that is exactly what I want to do. EKG -> Palm -> Specialist

Well, I mean the EKG -> Palm must be a fax, but the Palm -> Specialist does not have to be.
