Are you interested in trying out the upcoming releases of CS Fax? Development has come along nicely and so we're going to an Open Beta of the upcoming release of CS Fax.

Quote:
NOTE: This is BETA software actively being developed, NOT a release product. There may be known issues with it, serious bugs, or you may need to take extra steps in order to use it. Engineering releases may not work at all. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT 'BETA' SOFTWARE IS, DO NOT USE THIS VERSION; please use the current release instead.

Click > HERE < to download the current engineering build.

Note that the engineering release is just the CS Fax program itself (the .prc file,) not the full CS Fax package, which includes release notes and the manual. If you haven't already downloaded the CS Fax distribution and installed it on your device, please do that first.

The current engineering build is CS Fax 3.0.5. CS Fax 3.0.5 uses a different storage format than previous releases and as such, you must delete any saved faxes you have on your device from previous versions of CS Fax before installing 3.0.5.

The new release of CS Fax now supports card storage. You can now import and export from the storage card on your device. A new menu, "Fax", on the Saved Faxes screen both adds menu picks for fax operations (delete, rename, etc) and also Import and Export.

CS Fax's new external storage format is a type of TIFF file. They are compatible with a subset of the TIFF Class F (fax) file format. As such, the default filename extension is .tif and you can use these tif files directly in most any desktop application that supports TIFF format, including Windows Preview, ACDSee, Photoshop and many, many more.

You can work normally with faxes on the card, including faxing directly from the card. Simply select Import, select a fax and it will preview the fax. At this point you can save it to memory, or annotate it and fax it to someone directly. This makes it quite a bit easier to both store and fill out forms.

While we are not targeting or claiming support for general TIFF import with this release, we have found that Windows TIFF files from the Zan Image Printer printer driver (clickable link) can be set up to be CS Fax compatible, and we expect that other TIFF printer drivers will do the same. We would of course like to know of other successes.

With a Windows TIFF printer driver, anything you can print can be converted into a CS Fax-compatible external file. We've used this technique to convert and store a large number of forms in CS Fax-compatible files, including IRS tax forms (from PDFs), Word documents, spreadsheets and web browser pages. Basically anything that can be printed can be used in CS Fax.

Your feedback on 3.0.5 is much appreciated and we hope you enjoy the new facilities!

For the Zan driver mentioned above, the settings needed for CS Fax 3.1.0 (and some actually for any fax import) are:
  • Compression: CCITT Group 3
  • Rows Per Strip: Each page as a single strip (required by TIFF Class F (fax))
  • File mode: One multi-page (also required by TIFF Class F)
  • Advanced: Auto adjust image width to create faxable TIFF (Class F again)
  • Advanced: Group 3 Opts - 1D Modified Huffman (MH)
  • Advanced: Group 3 Opts - EOLs byte aligned (Class F again)
Some of those settings may already be the default. And almost certainly there are other Windows TIFF drivers that have these same options. We're not specifically endorsing the Zan driver here, it's just one option that we know works.

We had a suggestion for screenshots, since that list of settings might be a confusing. With the Zan driver, the settings are:

As people find other drivers that work, please post the appropriate settings here.

CS Fax build 3.0.6 is now available and has been posted. Use the download link at the top of this thread:

Apologies, but new functionality in 3.0.6 again changes the format used for faxes on the device and any faxes you have stored in memory are not compatible with the new build. If you are using 3.0.5 however you can transfer faxes over easily simply by exporting them to the storage card and importing them back (or leaving them there, for that matter.) If you are using an earlier version, you'll need to delete older stored faxes before installing 3.0.6.

The major new feature in CS Fax 3.0.6 is Send To/From Email and Beaming support. There is a new option under "Fax" in the Saved Faxes menu - Send To. This allows you to send a fax from CS Fax to another application on your device that supports TIFF files. In particular, this makes it very easily to take a fax in CS Fax and pass it on to your email application to send to someone as an attachment.

Conversely, you can also send TIFF attachments from your email client to CS Fax. Like CS Fax 3.0.5's new Import feature, not all TIFFs are CS Fax compatible (TIFF also includes many different non-fax formats as well), but many fax TIFFs, including the sample eFax tiff posted here are in the appropriate format, letting you use CS Fax as your TIFF viewer as well. You can also send an attachment sent to CS Fax as a fax over the modem immediately, and as always, annotation is supported as well.

In the process of testing the new email integration support, we sent faxes to the built-in Pics & Videos viewer on the Treo 650 and we were shocked at how poor it looked. Suffice to say, CS Fax's TIFF renderer is a dramatic improvement! And of course, with CS Fax you can annotate your fax as well as view it, so we think there are a number of uses for the new functionality.

We've tested with VersaMail and Markspace Mail in house. We'd appreciate hearing about your success (or failure) with other clients as well.

CS Fax build 3.0.7 is now available and has been posted. Use the download link at the top of this thread.

CS Fax 3.0.7 has been an engineering/fix build. We've used it to explore a number of issues and in the process it picked up a number of fixes along the way. From the release notes:

- Corrected issue that caused the device to reset when the user used global Find
- Altered call handling so that slow fax machines don't report
"send failed" when in fact CS Fax received the fax fine.
- Corrected issue that caused CS Fax to only receive 1 page on some units.
+ New auto-suggested filenames for incoming faxes
+ Improved diagnostics
+ Better extreme page length detection
+ Fax length sent reporting
+ Improved IR transmission handling
+ New method for sending logs to CS via email/sync
+ New Bluetooth session handling
+ New warning if signal strength is too low to reliably fax

This is feature freeze release. Please give this the third degree, we'll correct any final outstanding issues and then this will become 3.1.0. Thanks for your feedback!

CS Fax build 3.0.8 is now available and has been posted. Use the download link at the top of this thread.

CS Fax 3.0.8 is a minor update that fixes the issues with exported received faxes being unviewable by many TIF viewer packages on the PC. This fix is difficult to test completely because, for this particular feature, the sending fax machine is a factor, so please try exporting received faxes from as many different sending fax machines as possible. If you find any that you can't view on your PC, please let us know.

This is feature freeze release. Please give this the third degree, we'll correct any final outstanding issues and then this will become 3.1.0. Thanks for your feedback!

NOTE TO TREO 700 USERS: A patch from Palm has been released for the 700p that reportedly allows it to dial out. Please check the Treo 700p thread for more information.

CS Fax build 3.0.9 is now available and has been posted. Use the download link at the top of this thread.

CS Fax 3.0.9 includes both the 700p patch that has been in testing, and a new update to add support for the new Treo 755p.

The Treo 700p has a bug that prevents it from dialing, and it appears that the 755p has this problem as well. Release 3.0.9 works around this problem for approximately 2/3rds of 700p owners. The other 1/3rd appear to have a different issue, and the difference may be the location you're faxing from. The only way to know if the update will work for you on your device/carrier is to try it.
