I'd like to propose a discussion about the slot driver from TREOs.
My researches lead me to think about some myths that can be true:
1) Treo is the most popular smartphone in the world, thanks to the telephony companies who helped Palm to push its sales thru partnerships between then;
2) This partnership has some concerns. First, Palm would have to ensure that WiFi cards will not be allowed on Palm SmartPhones devices, due VoIP technology that strikes directly the telephony companies profit;
3) Old versions of TREO 650, by example, could have this restriction patched, like I read in some foruns. After this, Palm make some changes on their Treo devices.
Nowadays, the way they found to restrict SDIO devices is by power supply. The Concklin Systems team has made the CSSDrv application, that power-up Treo's SD slot when it has a SD card on it.
The most recent TREOs devices has a driver named MMCBulverdeIntelDvr_Device.prc that manage SD slot. I spoke with Palm technician who told me that's possible to set this driver to "perpetual power on mode", allowing us to use SDIO devices like WiFi, GPS, etc. Of course that they won't provide this release for us, so I invite everyone who has skills on it to help Concklin Systems to find a way to patch this unacceptable restriction.

You can find this driver on http://WWW.SPECTEC.COM.TW/download/gps-palm-treo650/MMCBulverdeIntelDrv_Device.prc

It is highly likely that the lack of SDIO support coming from Palm was at the carrier's request.

While we are starting to see WiFi phones now, Palm was the first to deliver a really popular, powerful smartphone, and so they were the first time the carriers were presented with the possibility of a phone that could surf off the network, to which they responded negatively (to say the least!)
