I actually managed to get time to run tests on a live 700p, and have verified that the issue is actually clear cut - the 700p isn't dialing the phone at all.

All the dial commands I tried (ATDT) simply fail outright. The 700p never dials. Needless to say, if it won't dial the phone, it certainly won't fax either!

We have a query into Palm and I know it's been passed around there, but we haven't heard back from them yet. There may also be a carrier component to the as well.

On the bright side, it doesn't appear to be an intermittent failure. Receive works, send doesn't.

I spent about an hour trying to get CSfax 3.0.1 to work on my Sprint PCS 700p with the following results:

- RECEIVE worked a couple of times but would NOT answer a fax call consistently... Sometimes it answered as a voice call even though CSfax was set to RECEIVE and I used the settings you suggested in an earlier message in this thread

- SEND doesn't work at all.

This has the potential to be an AWESOME application if these bugs are worked out. Please let me know if you need a Beta tester... I'd be glad to help.

That's a very interesting result. You mean that, when you set it to receive, the 700p got a call, overrode CS Fax waiting on the call and brought up the phone app?

The send issue we're aware of and in fact has been sent to Palm too.

Has anyone tried this on a Verizon 700p?

A sharp user has reported that there is a fix from Palm for the 700p here:
Infrared (IR) Software Update for Treo 700p Smartphones
(http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/rawir700p.html)
and that it fixed dialing out.

It appears to be for both Sprint and Verizon 700p's. Can anyone else try this update and confirm?

You had my hopes up, but I still get the "No Carrier" error. Crying or Very sad I'm using 3.0.1 on Sprint. What settings are you using? Maybe the update didn't work. How do I confirm the update was successful?

It was one of our (CS Online) users who reported that this fix allowed him to dial out. Since the issue is being able to dial out at all, all programs that use the internal wireless modem port should be affected similarly, including CS Fax. However we don't know exactly what settings he used. He did say he was on Verizon however, and he also mentions having an 'unlimited tethered modem' use with them.

There is a chance that modem use on EVDO is an option on Sprint, versus always-on with plain CDMA.

OK, so I have a snazzy new Palm Treo 700p with Verizon 'unlimited data' and 'tethered modem' service and like to use it for all sorts of things. So naturally I wanted to be able to dial other modems, like I did with older palms.

Initially, I was just as frustrated as the other folks here to see that the default firmware and apps of the palm 700p simply would not dial. I looked at the Palm website and they said all support was done via Verizon (although I knew from previous calls this was not altogether true, Verizon gets Palm engineers on the line when they're stumped). So I called Verizon, who predictably said that this was an 'unsupported' use of the phone, and particularly since it partly might relate to a 3rd party app (CSOnline) I just needed to work with the 3rd party app vendor. Since the big boys wouldn't help me, I read through the forums here for hints and Googled for init strings and other programs that should use the internal modem, so I could compare results.

Well, I have not used the Conklin fax program, although I probably will soon just to test it since there appears to be an interest here. However, if you want to get this thing to dial it's really a simple recipe:

1. install the "IR" update from palm:
http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/rawir700p.html
2: run that update (it will appear as a new application on the palm, which will reboot your palm when it runs). I also rebooted the palm manually before running the update.
3: shut down all other data apps that are using the modem (for me that was IM and IMAP email clients)
4: set CSOnline to use 19200/8/N/1 and no handshake (at least for the stuff I dialed)
5: go on-hook, then send "ATZ" and return
6: send "ATDT 202-555-1212" and return
7: be happy.

In this fashion, I have successfully dialed into some old BBS's just for grins with CSOnline. I believe such modem calls count against the voice minutes on your calling plan, so consider this your fair warning.

YMMV, but this works fine for dialing modems from the Verizon EVDO/CDMA network and their 1x/CDMA network. I can't vouch for other carriers.

2 points:

1. The fix/patch is an official link to the palm website, check it out yourself, no mystery or suspicous stuff involved. If they thought in the least it would hurt your 700p, it wouldn't be on their website.
2. I never said the patch would fix CSFAX. I just recently tried getting CSFax to dial myself with no luck. However, the patch *does* get CSOnline to dial just fine.

All the setup is fine, it just wont dial. We've been talking to Sprint this week - hopefully they'll shed some light.

Not entirely no news.

Palm recently recognized the fact that there are some issues with the 700p, which is encouraging since that suggests that there will be a ROM update. Since some of the reports of success on the 700p for CS Online involved applying a firmware patch, that's encouraging. (See this Treocentral thread for details.)

In other news, we'll have a new 700p (Sprint) in house tomorrow.

Any news? It's been 2 months. Are we waiting for a firmware update for the 700p?

We have an inquiry into Sprint for now, and are running tests. We have successfully dialed out on the 700p without the IR update patch, but it's erratic at this time.

Sometimes it dials. Mostly, it doesn't. Received calls are still being intercepted by new traps added to the 700p (it shuts down the running application, even if it's on the phone(!).) So 700p issues are still being investigated. So far we haven't seen a pattern to when it will and won't dial, which is problematic at best.

Last Friday we developed a fix for sending that worked 100% during our testing. That will be added to the next build. We still need to work around the 700p issues with receive.
