With CS Fax, you can send faxes directly from your handheld, "on the road." The current version features the following:
Fax technology isn't perfect. Unlike Palm technology which typically "just works," fax machines are subject to poor phones lines, paper jams, questionable fax machines and sometimes non-standard standards. That said, we strive to make CS Fax the most powerful Fax tool on the road. Your ideas and comments are welcome!
There are a number of different ways to use CS Fax. One of the most popular applications is using CS Fax on Palm-powered smartphones such as the Treo, but CS Fax can communicate over a cable to an external modem, over Infrared to an IR-based external modem and even over Bluetooth to either a standalone Bluetooth modem or Bluetooth-enable cellphone!
Please note that, with cellphones, you must have an appropriate service plan and your cell phone service provider must provide fax modem service. Please check with your carrier for details.
Thank you for choosing CS Fax!

If you are unsure how to install an application into your organizer, please consult the manual which came with it.
Before you install CS Fax, you should make a copy of the original disk and/or files and store the originals in a safe place, along with your registration code. Use a copy to install CS Fax from your Windows or Macintosh via InstallApp, Palm Desktop or similar program during your next HotSync session.
When you first run your new software, you'll need to enter a registration code (received via e-mail and at checkout). Enter your registration number to fully enable the software, or tap "Demo" to use as a demo.
If you'd like to share CS Fax with another Palm user, feel free! You can safely beam them a copy Palm-to-Palm over infrared to try. Not to worry, the receiver's copy will automatically turn into a fully functional trial copy, and your registration code will stay on your device.
The demo version of CS Fax provides a 40 launch or 30 day evaluation period, whichever comes first. To purchase a registration code, please visit our online store. Once purchased, you will receive a registration code at check out and via e-mail.
To learn more about each of the settings and how to configure CS Fax, read the following Setup section. For general information, read Using Fax.
Before sending your first fax, you must configure the application so that it knows your name and number, modem settings, and page settings.
Fax ID
This is the identification string which will be sent to the remote fax machine. This
text is usually recorded in a reception journal by the distant fax machine. As
specified by the standard, this ID has a maximum length of 40 characters. (The
content of this field can be printed with the tag &ID)
Name
This is the place to put your name. This string will be printed in the header of the
fax. Also 40 characters maximum. (The content of this field can be printed with the
tag &SNAME)
Fax #
Enter your fax number here. It will be printed in the header. 20 characters max. (The content of this field can be
printed with the tag &SPHONE)
The following three fields affect how phone numbers are dialed.
Dial Prefix
Use this field for any numbers that are required to reach an outside line. For example,
an office PBX often requires “9,” to reach an outside line.
CC Prefix (Calling Card Prefix)
The content of this field will be inserted before the phone number.
CC Suffix (Calling Card Suffix)
The content of this field will be appended after the phone number.
To summarize, the modem will dial the following number, assuming the corresponding check box is on:
[Dial Prefix][CC Prefix]Number[CC Suffix]
Clear after send
Enable to clear the contents of the text entry field after your FAX has been successfully sent.
When you first install CS Fax, it will attempt to identify the type of device and, in the case of Treo smartphones, the type of carrier (GSM or CDMA) that you are using and set itself up accordingly. If you are using an external modem, it won't be able to auto-detect that.
You'll want to verify that it has picked the correct configuration for your modem. Select "Modem Config" from the "Options" menu.
Modem
Tap on the box to the right of Modem to select a modem. The list contains some of the most popular modems/phones. If your modem is not listed and the program doesn't work with any of the modems listed, you should select Other and tap “Edit Settings” to create a custom setting.Port
Select the port that the phone or modem is connected to. If running OS 3.3 or
later, one of the choices will be IRComm (OS 3.3 thru 3.5) or Infrared (OS 4.0 and
later), which should be used for phones with an integrated IR modem (such as Ericsson
DI27, Nokia 8290, etc). If you need to use IR and “IRComm” or “Infrared” does not
appear, you will need to upgrade to OS 3.5 or later (for devices with upgradable
OS), or use a 3rd party utility such as “IR Link” to add that feature to your device
(such as Handspring Visor, which has OS 3.1H).
If your Palm Powered device has Bluetooth, you can choose Bluetooth from the port menu. After choosing Bluetooth, another item will become available; see Paired Device below.
Paired Device (when Port is set for Bluetooth)
This option allows you to pair a Bluetooth enabled cell phone to your Palm
Powered device for use with fax. While the procedure for pairing devices varies
widely by phone, the following basic outline has been quite successful for the
pairing. This procedure is quite involved, but luckily only needs to be performed
once.

Fax Speed
These buttons enable you to set the transmission speed between your modem and the distant fax machine.
Low corresponds to a speed of 4800 Bps
Med corresponds to a speed of 7200 Bps
High corresponds to a speed of 9600 Bps
If you experience some line error problems when sending faxes built during the transmission, try lowering the
speed of the communication between your modem and the distant fax machine.
If your modem is not listed in the list of modem supported or requires some special configuration, you can use it as long as it is a class 2 or class 2.0 fax modem. Use the “Edit Settings…” button in Modem configuration.
Speed
Select 9600, 19200, 57600, or 115200. Always use the highest communication
speed available between your handheld and your phone/modem.
Type
Most older modems, including the Pilot Snap On modem work with CLASS 2.
Newer modems/mobile phones sometimes support both 2.0 and the older CLASS
2, however some may work with CLASS 2.0 only (such as Motorola and Qualcomm/Kyocera
phones).
Use CTS/RTS
This enables you to select the hardware flow control between the modem and the
handheld.
Use XON/XOFF
This enables you to select software flow control between the handheld and the modem.
Timeout
The amount of time, in seconds, that the application will wait for the modem to connect to the remote fax machine
when dialing.
Init String
This string is sent to the modem before any fax operation.
Select “Page Setup” from the “Options” menu.
Margins (cm)
This lets you set the left and right margins for outgoing faxes.
Font
This allows you to select the default font when sending faxes. The choices are
Sans Serif, Serif, Monospaced, Standard, Bold, and Large. The first three are high
quality fonts while the last three use the built in fonts of the Palm OS for
compatibility with non-Roman character sets.
Resolution
This determines the quality for outgoing faxes. While Fine will yield a better result on the receiving fax machine, it
will take longer to transmit the fax.
CS Fax allows you to easily create and include cover pages for your faxes, and provides one, the Standard Cover Page, automatically. If you delete the Standard Cover Page, or rename it, CS Fax will re-create it automatically. CS Fax supports using macro codes in your cover page to represent pertinent information. This allows you to create a cover page that automatically has the appropriate information at the time of faxing.
Cover pages can contain your name, your company name, date, confidentiality notice, etc. Select “Cover Pages” from the “Options” menu.
The dialog to the right allows you to manage all of your cover pages. If you have existing cover pages, you can select one and either choose Edit or Delete. When you are finished managing your cover pages, tap Done.
In order to create a new cover page, tap New. This will present you with a dialog to create a new cover page. Each cover page should be assigned a unique name. The buttons at the top allow Mark/Space Fax to automatically enter information on the cover page when it is generated, for instance the date.
DName
This will insert the name of the recipient.
SName
This will insert the name of the sender as specified in User Settings.
SPhone
This will insert the phone number of the sender as specified in User Settings.
Time
This will insert the current time when the cover page is generated.
Date
This will insert the current date when the cover page is generated.
Ruler
This will insert a horizontal line.
CoverNote
When sending a fax, you will have the opportunity to type in a quick note to
be included on the cover page. This allows you to create a generic cover page
with all the basic information, plus your comments at the time you send a
particular fax. CS Fax formatting codes can be applied to the cover page
note as well as the main body of the fax.
When CS Fax first starts, you will be presented with the Welcome form. This allows you to easily access all of the features of CS Fax including sending a fax, receiving a fax, and viewing saved faxes. CS Fax remembers which form you were last viewing (Welcome, Sending a Fax, Viewing a Fax) and will automatically present you with that when the application starts.
You can navigate among the three main forms by using the popup menu in the upper right corner of the application.
In order to send a fax, you can either tap on the “Send A Fax” button from the main screen or choose “Send Fax” from the popup menu in the upper right corner.
In the middle of the display, you can enter the text that you would like to send. Various formatting tags can be entered to change how the text looks. These are explained in the section labeled “Using Tags”.
To
This is the name of the recipient. It will be used on cover pages that have the
DName tag in it. In addition, if you enter a name and tap the Lookup button, your
address book will be searched for a match and if one is found, the number will
automatically entered. If one is not found, you will be presented with a list of
names.
Number
This is the recipient’s fax number. If you need to enter special formatting for
dialing such as +1 and the area code or country code, you should enter it on this
line as Fax will dial the phone as listed.
Cover Page
Directly below Number, you can select which cover page, if any, will be used for
the fax. All of the cover pages you have previously setup will be listed here.
Lookup
If you enter a name in the To field and tap the Lookup button, your address book will be searched for a match and
if one is found, the number will automatically entered. If one is not found, you will be presented with a list of
names. If you have not entered a name in the To field, tapping this button will present you with a list of names.
Note: There is an issue with the stock Treo 650 Address Book application. When you pull up the list of names, it will show contacts normal numbers, and not their fax numbers. If you select an entry, Address book will send CS Fax the first fax number in the selected address book entry, regardless of which number you selected. If the entry has no phone number identified as type 'fax', then then number returned will be blank.
Clear
Tapping this button will clear the To and Number fields.
Send
Tapping this button will start sending the fax.
Preview
Tapping this button will allow you to preview the fax prior to sending. Preview
allows you to navigate through the pages (including cover page), scroll around,
and zoom in/out (using the +/- buttons). In addition, you can save the fax for
sending at a later time. If you would like to send the fax, tap Send and this will
start sending the fax.
Insert
If you tap on this menu, it will present you with a number of different pieces of
information that can be entered into your fax.
Insert Page Break
This will cause Mark/Space Fax to send an additional page. You can use this to
separate pages in your fax.
Insert Memo
This will present you with a list of memos that are stored on your device. Selecting
a memo from the list will allow you to insert it directly into your fax.
Insert Address
This will present you with a list of addresses that are stored on your device. Selecting an address from the list will
allow you to insert it directly into your fax
Insert To Do
This will present you with a list of to do items that are stored on your device.
Selecting a to do item from the list will allow you to insert it directly into your fax.
Insert Sketch
This will present you with a list of sketches that were created in Mark/Space
Sketch. Selecting a sketch from the list will allow you to insert it directly into your
fax.
Insert Doodle
This will allow you to select drawings made with the Doodle program for PalmOS.
Use the up and down rocker, or arrows on screen to find the one you want and then
tap Insert, and a code will be added for that particular image.
Phrases
Under the Insert items are phrases that you can define. These phrases may be
phrases that you commonly use or longer blocks of text; for instance, you can
name a phrase “signature” and have it insert a long signature that you do not want
to retype. Choosing Edit Phrases will allow you to create new phrases, edit existing phrases, and delete unwanted
phrases.
Editing the phrases can be seen in the pictures to the right.
The tags are special commands that you can insert in the text of your fax or cover page to include special information (such as the current date or time) or format your message.
All tags begin with the character '&'. You can use ‘&&’ to insert a single ‘&’ character. The tags are case sensitive. If a tag is not recognized, it is inserted into the text. ie, "&ZZZZ" would insert "&ZZZZ" since the tag is not recognized.
Most of the formatting tags can be entered from the menu, as a convenience so you do not have to remember the codes. The tags below marked in red are not available on the menu and have to be entered manually.

In order to receive a Fax, select "Receive Fax" from the Options menu or tap the "Receive" button from the Welcome form.
CS Fax will send the initialization strings to the modem and wait for an incoming fax. If you would like to cancel, tap the cancel button. NOTE: Not all modems support receiving faxes. Please check the Conklin Systems website for a list of modems that are known to support receive.
After the fax is received, it is automatically saved and then shown in Preview (see Preview for additional information).Any fax that you receive is automatically stored in Saved Faxes. Also, any fax that you are (pre)viewing you can choose to Save, which will also add it to the stored faxes. You can keep faxes as a reference, or you can send them back out, or you can Annotate faxes by adding your signature, filling out a form, etc, and then sending that out as a fax!
In the Saved Faxes menu, you can managed your stored faxes. You can delete, rename, view or send any stored fax.
Select Send to (re)send a stored fax. You're given the change to specify the new destination, any cover page you'd like, and a note to include on that cover page.
In the View Fax mode, either while viewing Saved Faxes or while Previewing a new fax you have created, you can Annotate the fax image. Simply draw on the fax image itself to add a signature, highlight information or make a quick editorial comment. Annotations are per-page, so if you try to change to the next page, or Save or Send the fax, CS Fax will ask if you want to Apply or Discard the changes.
While annotating, each pen stroke is recorded individually. You can use the Backspace key or Grafitti stroke to undo the strokes in reverse order. Once you Apply the changes, they become part of the preview image and cannot be undone. You can also manually force any annotations to be applied with the M key or Grafitti stroke.
Many commands can be referenced from the Fax menu bar. How you access the menu bar varies from device to device, so not all of the following options will work on your unit. You can:
